The Basics

I've never touched clay. Can I still come? Yes. That's the whole point. Our beginner classes, date nights, and try it classes assume zero experience. You'll leave with mud under your nails and something you made with your own hands. Both are badges of honor here.What should I wear? Clothes you don't love. Clay washes out of most fabric, glaze doesn't always. Closed toe shoes, hair tied back, nails trimmed if you're throwing, rings off. Come comfortable/come ready to get messy.Do I need to bring anything? Depends. One-time classes like try it and date night  classes include clay, tools, glazes, and firing. Show up. We handle the rest. If you're taking an eight week class you'll need a basic starter tool set (but we have some that you can buy if you roll in with nothing but enthusiasm.) Where are you and where do I park? 16 Stenersen Lane Suite 2, Cockeysville MD 21030. Park in front of the building, or around the side on the right. Can I bring my kids? Our regular classes are for ages 16+. We run dedicated youth sessions and family workshops seasonally, so check the calendar. Please don't bring little ones to open studio. Kilns are hot, wheels spin, and glaze buckets are exactly the height of a curious toddler. We know. We have them.

Classes

How do classes work? Most run in eight-week sessions, one class per week, same day/same time. You'll learn the full arc: wedging, building or throwing, trimming, glazing, and what happens in the kiln while you're not looking.Wheel or handbuilding? Both. Wheel throwing is the one you've seen in movies. Handbuilding is slabs, coils, and pinching, and it's every bit as satisfying. Not sure? Take an intro to each and let the clay decide.I took a class years ago. Am I a beginner? If it's been more than two years, start with a beginner or all-levels class. Clay has a way of humbling people who say "I remember how to center."I missed a class. Now what? Life happens. Current students can make up missed time during open studio hours in the same session, no instruction included, or we can try and stick you in another class depending on availability.  We can't refund or roll over missed classes.Do you do private events? Yes. Date nights, birthdays, team outings, bachelorette parties that want to leave with something other than a hangover. Email us with your headcount and we'll build it.

Membership

What is membership? Think gym membership, but you leave with dishes instead of gainz. A monthly fee gets you studio access during member hours, a personal shelf, clay, community glazes, shared tools and equipment, and firing.Can I join as a total beginner? Not yet, and it's for your own good. Members work independently, which means you can wedge, build or throw, trim, and glaze without someone standing over you. Finish a beginner session plus a continuing class (here or elsewhere) and you're ready.How much clay is included? Clay is not included, but it's available for sale from us at studio pricing. Please don't bring in outside clay without checking with us first. Wrong clay in our kilns can do real, expensive damage.I make a LOT of pots. Is that a problem? If you're producing 20+ pieces a month, talk to us. We love ambition, but we also have to keep kiln space fair for everyone. We'll figure out an arrangement that works.Can I store my stuff here? Your shelf is your kingdom. What fits on it stays, what doesn't goes home with you. Abandoned work gets a grace period, then a second life on our free shelf.

Kiln Gods and Rules

What cone do you fire to? We're a Cone 6 studio. All clay and glaze in our kilns must be rated for it. This is the one rule we're precious about, because the alternative is melted shelves and a very bad week.How long until my piece is done? Two firings, plus drying time in between. Plan on four weeks from wet clay to finished piece, longer during busy sessions. Pottery teaches patience whether you asked for the lesson or not.My piece cracked/warped/came out a weird color. Why? Clay is a material with opinions. Trapped air, uneven drying, glaze chemistry, kiln placement. Sometimes it's technique, sometimes it's physics, sometimes it's just the kiln gods keeping you humble. We fire everything with care, but we can't guarantee outcomes. The cracks are part of the deal. It's in our name.Will you fire pieces I made at home? Maybe? We'll work with our members case-by-case. Outside work has to be clearly labeled with a Cone 6 clay body. Mystery clay doesn't go in our kilns, full stop.

Studio Life

What's open studio? Scheduled hours when students and members can come practice without instruction. Check the calendar for current times. Bring headphones or don't, we keep good music on anyway.Is my finished pottery food safe? Pieces glazed with our studio glazes and fired properly are food safe unless we tell you otherwise. Unglazed or crawled surfaces on food ware, ask us before you serve soup in it.Do you sell gift cards? Yes, and they're the correct gift for the person who "doesn't need anything." shoot us a message, becuase if you're reading this we haven't sold one yet, so it's not set up. Can I just come look around? Please do. Stop by during open studio hours for a tour. Fair warning: nobody tours this place and leaves without signing up for something.

Refunds and transfers: We will try to work with you. If you need to switch sections, we'll swap you if there is room up to seven days before the session starts. After that, we've held your seat and bought your clay. Waitlists: Classes fill fast. Join the waitlist.
